Roof Construction

Portland’s Dharma Rain Zen Center was long overdue for a new roof.

Dharma Rain Zen Center Saves Energy with Solar Roof

Dharma Rain Zen Center has made good on its commitment to the environment by installing a new roof covered with solar panels. While the temple has always practiced simple living, this specific plan of action took root in May, 2005 when several monastic members attended a workshop by Oregon Interfaith Power and Light (OIPL). That July, OIPL conducted an energy and solar audit for Dharma Rain. OIPL is an offshoot of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon.

On July 18, DRZC Abbot Kyogen wrote, “As of yesterday, we are officially pumping electricity back into the electrical grid. Our electric meter at the Zendo building is running backward! During the summer (yes, even in the rain, like today) we get credit for the power we produce through the solar panels. During the winter, the power produced should offset our electricity needs for that building significantly.”

The organization’s Portland Dharma Center was long overdue for a new roof. Volunteers did much of the labor, relying heavily on the expertise of members Anthony Fujaku Stevens and Steve Tai’an Blackwood. Dharma Rain continues to raise money for the costs of the roof and other capital improvements. Members are planning a silent auction with buffet dinner and entertainment, to be held on October 6, as part of their fundraising effort.

While Dharma Rain Zen Center may be the first Buddhist community in Oregon to go solar, the Kagyu Sukha Chöling Center in Ashland, Oregon is planning to harness geothermal energy for heating and cooling, and eventually provide electricity for several buildings through solar power.
